We get on Interstate 64 and start our journey east. Tiger (cat) cries constantly, but the girls are all asleep and Serena can't get to the back seat to let the cats out of their carriers. Alyss continues to wheeze and cough up phlegm.
At 2am the lack of sleep and lack of dinner starts to get to Kevin and he starts acting really loopy. Serena stays up to help him stay awake. He doesn't want to switch drivers because it is so difficult to control the van with the trailer attached. He talks constantly and sings every song he can think of to stay awake. The trailer gets better and doesn't bump the ground as often, a huge relief.
We enter Indiana at 2 am and 114 miles.
Serena had prepared a list of all of the rest areas between Carbondale and New York City. We pull over at 3:30 am and Rest Area 58. Kevin's intent was to stop the van and get a few hours sleep. When we stopped though the dogs woke up and Lilly woke up and then Abby woke up. There was a guard at the rest area and many cars parked there with sleeping occupants. We felt relatively safe. We took the dogs out for walks and then Serena took the girls in to the bathroom. Everyone back in the van and all the doors locked we all fell asleep. Lilly enjoyed the time in Serena's lap and they curled up under the prayer shawl from the Presbyterian knitters.
Everyone started waking up at 7:30 am and after cleaning out the car and rearranging a bit we got back on the road.
