We leave Carbondale at 8:00pm Wednesday night. The van is packed full! Katie, Abby, and 2 cat carriers in the back seat. Lilly and 2 dogs in the middle seat. We are pulling a 4x8 U-Haul trailer and have several items secured on the roof of the van. The trailer is riding really low and hits the pavement when we go over bumps.
We stop in Carterville to check the hitch and to be sure the items on the cartop are secure.
We stop again in West Frankfort to say good-bye to Kevin's mother. Kevin calls U-Haul and asks about having the hitch checked. The earliest time one opens is in Lexington at 7am. We discuss stopping for the night but decide to keep going. When we get ready to leave West Frankfort, Alyss (dog) is really wheezing and keeps coughing stuff up so we unload the dogs and let them cool off in the grass. Serena and the girls walk to the gas station nearby and buy a jug of water for the dogs. Something we managed to forget. We pack up again and put the dogs on the van seat instead of the floor so they may be cooler and more comfortable. Serena is cold but we keep the air conditioner on so the animals don't get over heated.
There is a full moon, huge, and beautiful. We are reminded of Aeris' first birthday and how big and full the moon was that night. Perhaps a sign that she is traveling right along with us and we are not leaving her behind.
Our last stop in Illinois is at Serena's grandma's home for our last good bye. It is after midnight but she gets up and sees them off.
