Well, sometime last Saturday while we were apple picking I lost my Columbia ID. It had my house key and mailbox key attached. I have to swipe the ID to get into any building on campus, including our apartment building.
The guards here have been really nice and let me in each time I take the dogs or the kids out. I ahve only had one give me a hard time and after seom hesitation he allowed me in after making me sign the book as a guest. If you remember they were going to have me do that when we first arrived. Makes me SO MAD to sign in as Kevin's guest when I live here. I am not a pizza delivery guy or someones one night stand. I live here, as a wife and mother. Anyway...
So first thing Monday I went to housing to inquire about replacing everything. It will cost $165! $20 for a new ID, $20 for a new mailbox key, and $125 for a new house key. We decided we really didn't need a new housekey, we will share Kevin's for now. I ordered a new mailbox key and they said it would be ready in 48 hours. I was there waiting when the office opened Monday so 48 hours would be 9 am on Wednesday. You had to pay cash for a new ID so I can't get that until Kevin's next payday.
Explaining to the guard that no I really don't have $20 was an unimaginable situation for him. When Kevin gets paid Friday I will get the new ID.
Wednesday came and still no key so Thursday morning at 9am I was there again waiting for the office to open. He said he didn't know anything about it. I reminded him he told me it would be ready Wednesday morning and he said, "Oh the guy who does the keys is gone all this week." Oh my gosh!!! I was ready to scream. Kevin's check comes in the mail, not to mention all our other letters. Coincidentally, the boss was gone as well.
When Kevin called for his daily check in at lunch I told him adn he said he would have a few choice words with the guy when he got home. I few hours later the office called me at home and said they had located a locksmith who would have my new key ready for me this afternoon. I called Kevin to tell him never mind not to yell at the guy. Apparently he had called and already spoken to him, thus the sudden ability to find a locksmith.
I had wondered if it was the house key that we had tried to replace if they would have expected us to sleep in the hallway or lobby since the keymaker is on vacation?!
By the way, we did search the van and the street and called the orchard and restaurant and no one has seen the ID and keys. It was clipped on my jeans where I always carried it. Never again though. No money or anything important on it so I would think if found it would be turned in. Nothing to steal and try to hide or lie about.
Ack! What a stressful mess. That still isn't resolved. New ID tomorrow.
