Our Neighborhood

The AppleTree is the closest market. It is on the corner of Amsterdam and 120th. It is open 24 hours. It has a hot deli area, but not much grocery selection, is expensive, and the staff are rude.

After we discovered the Olive Tree on the opposite corner (Broadway and 121st) we pretty much only go there. The staff are wonderfully friendly and they have a cat! She is a pretty calico who walks around the store and sometimes sits on the front step and watches the people go by. As much as I have tried I haven't been able to get her picture though. Customer service goes a long way in my book. We definately remember the places where the employees treat you nicely or are at least polite. Many scowl if you try to be friendly to them or ask a question.

There are pay phones all over the city. Carbonale seemed to have gotten rid of many fo theirs so we were surprised to see them here.
The newsstand. I really like these. Reminds me of the pug in Men in Black who was at the newsstand. We have never shopped at one though since I don't buy the newspaper.

The library. My favorite place. This is the Morningside Branch. We live in the borrow Manhattan but our neighbornood is called Morningside Heights. The library is on Broadway around 113th. It is cattycorner from our church. There are many, many branches but this is the one we go to.

The Farmer's Market. Lots of squash out right now and apples. The girls got black and white cookies, a New York thing. They are huge and really thick. Everywhere hear sells them. The stands are set up along Broadway in front of campus, across the street from our church. It meets on Thursday and Sunday so we can easily walk past on our way home from church.
